A garbage disposal or garburator is a device that is often electrically-powered and installed under a kitchen sink. It is normally placed between the sink’s drain and the trap which shreds food waste into small pieces for it to pass through plumbing.

Some of the manufacturers use standard mountings for their models which makes easier to replace each unit by any model of the same brand. Plenty of standard disposal units allow a dishwasher to be connected and there are some dishwashers equipped with a small built-in garbage disposal unit making it unnecessary to scrape plates before washing them. However, these kinds of dishwashers are more expensive.
